JEMPARINGAN – Royal Traditional Archery

Jemparingan is a traditional archery practice originating from the Mataram Kingdom. Unlike modern archery, which is typically performed while standing, Jemparingan is practiced in a seated, cross-legged position.

Its roots date back to the early days of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, when Hamengku Buwono I encouraged his people to develop archery skills as a way to cultivate discipline, honor, and noble character.
