In Yogyakarta, food is rarely just food. It carries memory, ceremony, craftsmanship and the stories of generations. On 28 September 2026, Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta became part of the Wonderful Indonesia Gastronomy journey, welcoming an international gathering of media, KOLs and tastemakers for an evening that brought together the cultural heritage of Yogyakarta and the traditions of its royal table.
Set within the historic grounds of Kedhaton Ambarrukmo, the experience began not at the dining table, but with a journey into the past. Before dinner, guests were invited to explore the heritage of Pesanggrahan Kedhaton Ambarrukmo, discovering the architectural details, royal spaces and cultural stories that continue to shape the identity of the estate today. The heritage tour offered a glimpse into the legacy of Ambarrukmo as a former royal retreat, where history remains part of the living landscape.
The journey continued with an introduction to Aksara Jawa, the traditional Javanese script. Guests were invited to write their own names in Aksara Jawa, creating a personal connection with a form of cultural expression that has been passed down through generations. It was an intimate introduction to Yogyakarta: to understand a place not only through what one sees, but through what one learns, creates and carries home.
The heritage journey culminated at Gadri, where guests gathered for Ladosan Dhahar a dining experience inspired by the traditions of royal hospitality and the cultural rituals surrounding the Javanese table. More than a curated menu, Ladosan Dhahar presents gastronomy as a form of storytelling. Each element of the experience is designed to evoke the traditions of a royal household, from the setting and service to the dishes that celebrate the flavours and culinary heritage of Yogyakarta.

The evening invited guests to discover Indonesian gastronomy through a distinctly Javanese lens, where recipes are connected to place, ingredients carry meaning, and the act of dining becomes an expression of culture. For the international media, KOLs and tastemakers in attendance, the experience offered a different perspective on Indonesian gastronomy: one that moves beyond the plate and into the history, traditions and people that give food its identity.
Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta’s participation in Wonderful Indonesia Gastronomy reflects its commitment to preserving and introducing the cultural heritage of Yogyakarta through contemporary hospitality. As a property rooted in the history of Kedhaton Ambarrukmo, the hotel sees gastronomy as an important part of cultural preservation, an opportunity to keep traditions relevant by allowing them to be experienced, understood and shared with a new generation of travellers.
Gastronomy allows us to tell the story of a destination in one of the most intimate ways. Through Ladosan Dhahar, we invite our guests to experience Yogyakarta not simply as a place they visit, but as a culture they can taste, learn about and connect with. From the heritage walk through Kedhaton Ambarrukmo to writing one’s name in Aksara Jawa, and finally gathering around the royal table at Gadri, the evening reflected a philosophy at the heart of Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta heritage is most meaningful when it remains alive through experience.

Through Wonderful Indonesia Gastronomy, the journey continues, bringing Indonesia’s culinary richness to the world while celebrating the cultural stories that make every destination uniquely its own.
